HE’S GOT GOOD SKIN, PART 1

 
 

With so much information available out here in these streets, it is hard to narrow down what is legitimate and what is trash. I’ve had my skin for 25 years now, surprise. But here’s the thing, since last year I’ve realized that keeping it fresh and toned isn’t exactly as effortless as it used to be. So I decided to invite you on my journey through the mountain of moisturizers and toners and tings that just might be the tea for me and my chocolate skin. Yours too! Personally, I don’t love the idea of toiletry bags full of serums and pills and excitement just for healthy skin. Yea, no massive product haul for me. Thankfully I have an abundance of friends with a wealth of information on these things that’ve been guiding me through finding my jam. But don’t let that trick you, in this series I will be speaking as though this is all information I innately know. Any way, here’s part one.

To get started there are three main goals you should have in mind. These are to exfoliate, moisturize and protect your skin. Now that you’re armed with ambition and intention, it’s time to explore how we may go about ticking all the boxes in a healthy way.


EXFOLIATION

Granulated sugar is an excellent exfoliant that you can source very easily. Fun fact; The Face Place's Marie-Simone Hall was the first to clinically introduce that to me. Exfoliating your skin is very important, as it removes dead skin cells and improves blood circulation. Make a simple scrub recipe by mixing granulated sugar with a little honey or essential oil. Wash the areas you’re focusing on with warm water and apply the sugar scrub in a circular motion. Yep, wax on wax off darling! Rinse off with cold water, and moisturize immediately. Your skin will be noticeably softer and smoother.

MOISTURIZATION

If you have dry skin like myself, you should definitely take this introduction to jojoba oil very seriously. Jojoba oil is very similar to the natural oil on your skin. That said its quite absorbent so it doesn’t clog your pores even half as much as most ingredient packed moisturizers do. Jojoba also doesn’t evaporate quickly like water-based moisturizers, , so it will help your skin retain moisture ALL DAY. A little bit goes a long way. For the record I do prefer an oil to a cream any day but product recommendation

aside, regardless of what how you moisturize - timing is super important.If you want to moisturize your skin properly, make sure to apply your lotion or moisturizer right after you take a shower or get out of the bath. This helps lock the moisture your introducing to your skin better.

PROTECTION

The foods we eat impacts our health. Fact. No argument there right? Well, did you know that tomatoes are great skin health boosters especially for  sunburn protection? Research has shown that people who consume 5 tablespoons of tomato sauce every day were more likely to suffer less sunburn outbreaks versus those who did not. I mean I’m not about to gulp down tomato sauce shots anytime soon but this is good news seeing that the sun is a primary factor in how our skin ages. And honey age is NOT just a number when your face is wrinkled up like last weeks laundry. So yes, boost your skin care with fruits. Apparently fruits are nature’s miracle cure for acne. Not an issue for me but is ‘suh’ me hear! Different fruits provide you with different vitamins obviously. Therefore, a cocktail of fruit is your best option to getting started. Research has also shown time and time again that a cocktail really does fix everything.
 

Guys, don’t go overboard with the skin care products. Just about all of them take time to set in and work on your skin. So if you are using a variety of products, one after another without giving them time to settle you could be wasting your money by washing them down the drain before they even have a chance to work. Many body washes for instance contain ingredients that actually dry your skin out. To help prevent dry skin, choose body washes that contain vitamins or moisturizers. Like Neville Barbers ‘energising wash’. It’s made up of a botanical blend of sugar cane, lemon, seaweed and pumpkin, to gently exfoliate and stimulate cell renewal as well as invigorating skin and boosting hydration. It’s smarter than your average shower gel (and smells better too). And yes, they pay me to try but they can’t pay me to lie. Waking up at 5am every morning, this wash is among my most prized possessions. Following closely behind is their fantastic ‘beard grooming argan oil’. It contains a blend of organic argan oil and grape seed oil, which softens, tames and hydrates. It’s scented with a blend of Bergamot and cedarwood, the same principle ingredients found in my favorite Tom Ford scents, how nice. I use it every day after cleansing and applying my razor bump treatment (tea tree oil + Magic after-shave gel). That gel by the way is also one of my favorite things. It says it’s formulated for black men, idk how scientifically factual that is but I’m a black man so no research needed there. I’m sure it smells great though and it actually works. It’s one of those products you find yourself applying to places you know it’s not meant for. Its whatever.
