STELLA’S STILL GROOVING
At 57 Angela Bassett is still the quick stepping, groovy black actor with the muscles, grit and prowess to captivate an audience of any age and era. Growing up, Aunty Angela -for me- personified feminism. And not in the ferocious and protesting way but of the variety of strong women of color that through life’s harshest realties always finds her peace. From the Tina Turner story (What’s love got to do with it - 1993) to How Stella got her groove back (1998), Angela was that girl. My affinity for aunty ‘Gela’ does stem from those two roles. The roles of her lifetime she’ll say. Playing Stella and Tina, Angela showed women of color and women everywhere that no matter what her creed violence against women is very real and that she deserves to be loved and cherished regardless of her age and stage in life. So here’s to one of my childhood influences, a celebration of Angela Bassett just because I can. Keep on grooving.
